A Decade of Determination: Wollongong Community Unites in the Fight Against Brain Cancer at Walk4BrainCancer Wollongong (12th October)
This October, Kate Mitrovski will host her 10th Walk4BrainCancer in Wollongong in honour of her late father, uniting the community to raise $75,000 to fund vital brain cancer research.
On Sunday, 12 October 2025, the Wollongong community will come together for the 10th anniversary of Walk4BrainCancer Wollongong.
Hosted by Wollongong local Kate Mitrovski in honour of her late father, Walk4BrainCancer Wollongong will unite fighters, survivors, families and supporters of the cause to honour loved ones and raise vital funds for Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.
Since launching the event in 2015, Kate has been the driving force behind its remarkable 10-year journey, transforming Walk4BrainCancer Wollongong into one of the Illawarra’s most inspiring community fundraisers. Over the past decade, more than 3,300 participants have come together, raising an incredible $547,757 to support life-saving brain cancer research.
Kate’s dad, Stojan (Steven) Apostoloski was just 35 years old when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Tragically, he passed away only a year later, leaving behind his wife and three young children.

For Kate, the walk is a powerful way to honour her dad’s memory while rallying the community to stand with those affected by brain cancer. This year, she and the Wollongong community are on a mission to raise $75,000, building on a decade of incredible support.
Together, the Wollongong community hope to smash past the $600,000 mark and make this 10th anniversary the most impactful Walk4BrainCancer yet.
“My dad was only 35 when he passed away, and more than 30 years later brain cancer is still claiming too many lives,” Kate says.
“The walk for me represents awareness, funds for research and advocacy, but also support, love, hope, honour, and respect. Every year Wollongong comes out stronger - and this 10th anniversary we’re ready to make it our biggest and most powerful walk yet!”

This year’s event will feature an inspirational 2–5km walk on the Beaton Park track. The day will also include family-friendly activities, such as a sausage sizzle, food stalls, DJ, dance and vocalist performances, jumping castle, face painting, a guest address by Cure Brain Cancer Foundation CEO Andrew Giles, and a raffle with fantastic prizes.
Walk4BrainCancer is the flagship fundraising initiative of the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation (CBCF), Australia’s leading organisation dedicated to funding world-class brain cancer research, advocacy, and awareness.
This year, CBCF aims to raise over $1.6 million nationally through Walk4BrainCancer events, helping to accelerate new treatments and ultimately improve survival rates.
Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in children and adults under 40 in Australia. Despite these devastating statistics, brain cancer research continues to receive disproportionately low funding. The five-year survival rate has remained at just 20% for more than 30 years.
CEO of Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, Andrew Giles, emphasises the significance of the event:
“Walk4BrainCancer Wollongong brings the community together to raise essential funds for groundbreaking research. Kate Mitrovski’s inspiring courage and determination, highlights the impact individuals can have when they turn their personal challenges into action.”
