They’re walking for four of their workmates who’ve all battled brain cancer.

On Sunday, 26 October, the Recar team will participate in Walk4BrainCancer Brisbane, a fundraising initiative of the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, to honour two beloved colleagues who lost their lives to brain cancer and celebrate two others who have fought their way back.

Over the past decade, brain cancer has deeply touched the Recar family.

Noel Stoyles, who worked at Recar for 10 years, passed away in 2020.

Liam Hannay, a talented apprentice mechanic with a bright future ahead, tragically passed away in 2024 at just 21 years old.

James Byrne was diagnosed with a brain tumour four years ago, courageously recovered, and returned to work within six months before retiring after 50 years of service.

Phil Mehlhose underwent his third brain surgery last year, facing serious complications and a long recovery journey. Against the odds, Phil returned to work this year — and on Sunday, he’ll proudly take part in Walk4BrainCancer Brisbane with the help of a wheelchair and his Recar teammates by his side.

“For us as a team, going through something as life-changing as brain cancer, whether personally or through our colleagues, it changes your perspective completely,” Noel & Kerry from Recar shared.

“At first, it’s overwhelming and you’re just trying to get through each day. But over time, we realised that sharing our experience could help others who are walking the same path. We wanted to turn something painful into something positive. Raising awareness and supporting research felt like a way to honour what we as a team have been through and to give others hope.”

This year, the Recar Walk4BrainCancer team is walking to raise funds for Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, Australia’s leading organisation dedicated to funding research and improving survival outcomes.

“My advice to anyone going through a similar experience is to take it one day at a time and lean on others for support,” the spokesperson added. “There’s strength in talking about what you’re going through and connecting with people who truly understand. Remember, you don’t have to face it alone.”

And the Recar team will not be alone, with an estimated 600 Queenslanders expected to rally for Walk4BrainCancer Brisbane, hoping to reach a fundraising target of $150,000.

Walk4BrainCancer Brisbane will start at 8:00 am, with the 5km walk commencing at 9:00 am. Participants will follow a scenic 5km route along Downfall Creek, finishing with a family-friendly BBQ, music, and entertainment.

CEO of Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, Andrew Giles, highlights the importance of the event:

“The Recar team shows what it means to turn heartbreak into hope. Phil’s determination to take part in the walk, supported by his team, is an incredible example of courage and community in action.”

To register for Walk4BrainCancer Brisbane or to support Phil and the Recar team, visit www.walk4braincancer.com.au.

Walk4BrainCancer Brisbane Details:
\u200bSunday, 26 October 2025 – from 8:00 am
\u200b7th Brigade Park, Murphy Road, Chermside QLD 4032
\u200bhttps://walk4braincancer.com.au/walks/brisbane/

About Cure Brain Cancer Foundation

Cure Brain Cancer Foundation is an Australian-based organisation that is working globally to rapidly improve brain cancer survival through funding innovative brain cancer research.

Cure Brain Cancer Foundation is the largest dedicated funder of brain cancer research in Australia.
