Perth Couple Takes on Walk4BrainCancer Perth After Their Six-Year Brain Cancer Battle
Rebecca, her husband Myles, and their two young sons will join hundreds on the South Perth Foreshore to raise awareness, funds, and hope for families facing brain cancer.
When Rebecca (Bec) Fleay laces up her sneakers on November 16, she won’t just be walking, she’ll be honouring the man who changed her life, and the fight that has defined it.
In December 2019, just months after getting engaged and while expecting their first baby, her fiancé Myles suffered a seizure at work. Within days, the couple received the devastating diagnosis, a grade 4 astrocytoma (Glioblastoma), the most aggressive form of brain cancer. Myles was just 26 years old.
“Our world shattered,” Bec recalls. “One moment we were planning our future as parents, the next we were sitting in hospital waiting rooms, hearing words no one should ever have to hear.”
Against unimaginable odds, Myles faced two major surgeries, months of radiation, and a full year of chemotherapy, all while navigating new fatherhood and the isolation of COVID lockdowns.

Bec reflects on the overwhelming impact cancer still has on the family and the reality of living with regular medical appointments and scans.
“Although you are essentially going back to a ‘normal’ life, knowing that Myles cancer could return at any time is always in the back of our minds, we often find ourselves living and planning our lives in 3-month blocks.”
Nearly six years on, Myles continues to defy expectations. His scans are stable and the couple now have two beautiful boys, Oliver (5) and Arti (3), and this November, the family will take part together in Walk4BrainCancer Perth, their third time stepping out in support of the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation (CBCF).
During Myles’ diagnosis, Rebecca leaned on Cure Brain Cancer Foundation for guidance, support, and access to research, finding a vital source of information and reassurance during an overwhelmingly uncertain time.
“The biggest impact Myles has had on me, is his absolute love for life. He never lets anything get him down or stop him from doing what he wants. His amazing outlook on life has got our family through all of this.”
This year, Bec’s family team, Rebecca is Walking to Cure Brain Cancer!, has already raised over $3,500, surpassing their goal and adding to the nearly $15,000 they’ve raised over previous years.

Walk4BrainCancer Perth will see hundreds of people gather at Sir James Mitchell Park on Sunday 16th November to honour loved ones, celebrate survivors, and raise funds for life-saving research. Participants will take on a scenic 5km walk along the South Perth Foreshore.
This year, Walk4BrainCancer Perth aims to raise $200,000, and is already nearly halfway there, with over $110,000 raised to date, funds that will support critical brain cancer research and advocacy initiatives.
Walk4BrainCancer is the flagship fundraising initiative of CBCF and takes place in communities across Australia each year. Nationally, the campaign aims to raise more than $1.6 million in 2025 to accelerate new treatments and improve survival rates for people impacted by brain cancer.
Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in children and adults under 40 in Australia. Despite these devastating statistics, it continues to receive disproportionately low funding. The five-year survival rate has remained at just 20% for more than 30 years.
Andrew Giles, CEO of Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, said stories like Myles and Rebecca’s are what the event is all about.
“Bec’s family embodies the strength and determination that define our community. By walking together, we’re not just funding research, we’re giving hope, we’re changing futures.”
